Hi! I am Hannah.
I grew up in a family that looked at objects closely. My grandfather was a watchmaker and jewellery designer. My father followed him. My mother became an appraiser of antique precious metals and gemstones. Before I knew the word for it, I knew that a small mark on the base of something can tell you everything.
So I learned to look at objects closely: not just at what they are, but at what they carry. A hairline crack that tells a story. A stamp that places a bowl in a specific kiln, in a specific decade. The soul that accumulates in something well-made and long-used.
That same eye is what takes me to Japan to source. I source with a sense of curiosity and honesty, often spending hours browsing and in conversation with local collectors and artisans.
I want to know where a bowl was fired, who held the doll, and what story the wood carries.
Whether it is a hand-carved Kokeshi doll or a hand-glazed chawan matcha bowl, every item in my collection is personally sourced locally in Japan. I always look for the beauty of natural materials and the charm of an authentic patina.
Why kaiko&co?
The name comes from the Japanese word 懐古, kaiko: a quiet longing for the past. Not sadness, but the particular feeling you get when you hold something old and well-made, and sense the life it has already lived. Nostalgia.
It is the feeling I recognise every time I pick up a bowl that has been used for decades, or a kokeshi that sat on someone's shelf for forty years. Something in the object carries time, and you can feel it.
That feeling is what I am looking for when I source. And it is what I hope you find when something from this shop arrives at your door.
Sourced with love
When I am in Japan, I am not just looking for items.
I am searching for pieces that feel alive: objects that have been somewhere, that have been part of someone's life. Bringing that back to Europe and into your home, is the part of this work I love most.
I go to Japan several times a year. The days are long and slow. Markets in cities like Matsuyama and Kyoto, conversations with local collectors, hours spent with dealers who have been doing this for decades.
I look at a lot and buy selectively. What I'm looking for isn't just age or rarity. It's the specific quality of something that was made carefully and used with care.
I've been invited into tea rooms, introduced to kilns, and shown things that never make it to the internet. That access comes from patience and from the relationships I've built over time.
It is a slow process. That is exactly where the kaiko feeling lives.
The heart behind &CO….
It stands for the wonderful, warm people I meet in Japan. The local collectors, the small-scale artisans, and the keepers of tradition who welcome me into their world.
Without them, my business simply wouldn't exist. They are the ones who share the hidden stories behind every authentic item and guide me to those unique, tucked-away places that aren't on any map.
Even though they often remain anonymous to the outside world, they are the heartbeat of everything I do. By adding ‘& Co’ to my name, I want to give them the place they deserve in this journey. It is a tribute to our collaboration, our friendship, and the shared love for these beautiful Japanese treasures.
