One glaze, three lives: a wood-fired chawan explained

This chawan was fired at the Kakuzan-gama, a kiln built in 1959 inside the Kyoto headquarters of Ōmoto, a Japanese religious movement, by Kaneshige Sozan, a member of Bizen's most celebrated pottery family. It is signed by Deguchi Eiji, who served as Ōmoto's Sōchō (director) from 1958 to 1962. A single white glaze on this bowl developed rust, near-black and crystalline blue effects during firing, the result of flame position, ash deposit and heat variation inside a wood kiln, not of painting or decoration.

There is a moment, every time I turn a chawan slowly in my hands for the first time, where I stop trusting my own eyes. This one did that to me twice, standing in a small tea shop in Kyoto, long before I knew anything about where it had actually been made.

It was the inside that stopped me first. The interior pools into a deep, mossy green touched with gold, and it happened to catch a shaft of sunlight coming through the shop window at exactly the wrong, perfect angle. I have bought very little on instinct alone in all my years of sourcing. This was one of those rare times.

From one side, the glaze looks almost calm, a pale, crackled white. Look closer and that white is covered, edge to edge, in a fine web of cracks, hundreds of them, catching the light like a cracked windshield. Turn it a few degrees and that same surface has turned to rust, deep orange bleeding into near black at the rim, as if something had scorched it from the inside. Turn it further still and you find a rougher patch, gritty under the thumb, where tiny silvery blue crystals sit embedded in the glaze itself. Not painted on. Grown there, in the kiln, during firing.

Same bowl. Same glaze. Zero paintbrushes involved. This is what a wood-fired kiln does that no brush ever could.


One glaze, three lives

The base glaze on this chawan is a thick white, the kind of glaze that potters spend years learning to apply just so, thick enough to pool and crackle, thin enough not to run off the rim entirely. On its own, fired evenly, it would stay white. Quiet. Predictable.

But nothing about a wood kiln is predictable, and that is precisely the point.

The crystal patch, based on how these ash glazes generally behave, is iron: iron-bearing minerals in the ash or clay, caught in a low-oxygen stretch of the firing, can turn a grey-blue instead of the more common rust or amber. Combine that with small mineral grains partly melting into the surface, and you get exactly what you can feel there under a thumb, a rough, faintly metallic patch that behaves differently to the smooth glaze around it. That caught my eye and hand before anything else on this piece did.

Three effects. One glaze. The only variable is where, exactly, this particular bowl sat inside the kiln, and how the flame moved around it on the day it was fired.

The crackle running through all of it, the kannyū, is its own small piece of physics. Glaze and clay cool at different speeds after firing. As they shrink back down, the glaze contracts faster than the clay underneath it, and it splits, ever so slightly, into thousands of tiny fractures across the surface. It is not damage. It is not a flaw the potter failed to prevent. It is simply what a thick glaze does, every time, on nearly every piece like this one, and it is part of why the surface catches light the way it does, breaking it into hundreds of small, uneven reflections instead of one smooth sheen.

Nobody chose this. The fire did.

This is the part that took me longest to really understand about pieces like this one, and the part I think is worth explaining, because it changes how you look at the bowl in your hands.

The potter did not paint the rust marks on. Nobody decided, precisely, that the crystal patch would form exactly there, in that shape, that size. A wood kiln is not an oven with a dial. Wood burns unevenly. Ash drifts. Heat pools in some corners and races through others. Every piece placed inside comes out having had its own, entirely unrepeatable conversation with the fire.

Which means the bowl in front of you right now is the only one that will ever look exactly like this. Not because the potter set out to make something rare, but because it is physically impossible for a kiln to produce the same result twice. Somewhere in Japan, another chawan from the same batch, thrown from the same clay, dipped in the same glaze, came out looking nothing like this one. Sat a few centimetres to the left. Caught more ash, or less flame, or cooled a little differently.

Why the foot tells the rest of the story

Turn the bowl over and the story continues in a different register. The base, the kodai, is left completely bare, no glaze at all, just the clay itself: warm, ochre red, slightly rough. You can still see the spiral marks left by the wire that cut the bowl free from the wheel.

Leaving the foot unglazed is deliberate, standard practice for a chawan, and it does something quietly important: it shows you, honestly, what the clay actually is underneath all that glaze drama happening above it. Red, iron rich, humble. That colour is not decoration either, it is iron in the clay itself, the same iron that reacts with the glaze up above to create the rust and near-black fire marking in the first place. A paler, iron-poor clay simply could not have produced the same fireworks.


A kiln built for a religion, not a market

None of this happened in an ordinary studio, and that turned out to matter as much as the fire itself.

Most kilns exist because someone wanted to sell pottery. The Kakuzan-gama exists because a religious movement in Kyoto Prefecture wanted its own place to make things by hand, and asked one of the most respected names in Japanese ceramics to build it.

  • That name was Kaneshige Sozan. Born in 1909 into the Kaneshige family of Inbe, the heart of Bizen ware, Sozan trained under his older brother Kaneshige Tōyō, who would later be designated a Living National Treasure. Sozan spent his twenties firing kilns for his brother before doing something almost nobody in his position did: he left.

  • In 1951, at 42, Sozan stepped away from the Kaneshige family kiln and travelled to Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, to the headquarters of Ōmoto, a Japanese religious movement founded in the late nineteenth century that placed art, calligraphy and craft at the centre of its practice, not as decoration around the religion, but as part of it.

  • He built a kiln there, the Kameizan-gama, and spent years working alongside Ishiguro Munemaro, a master of iron glazes, Korean-influenced Yi-dynasty techniques and Cizhou-style white slip, whose teaching shaped Sozan's range far beyond the Bizen tradition he had grown up in.

  • Eight years later, in 1959, Sozan built a second kiln for Ōmoto, this time in Ayabe: the Kakuzan-gama, the kiln this chawan was fired in. He worked there for five years, firing not only Bizen but Shigaraki stoneware, ash glazes, cobalt underglaze painting and Tenmoku, a working range that reflected everything he had absorbed from Ishiguro and from his own restless curiosity.


A director who fired his own tea bowls

What makes the Kakuzan-gama unusual is not only who built it, but who used it.

Deguchi Eiji married into the Deguchi family, the family that founded Ōmoto, and in 1958 became the movement's Sōchō, its director, a position he held until 1962. He was not brought in as a potter. He held one of the most senior administrative roles in the entire organisation. And yet pieces signed with his name, in his own hand, on their tomobako, exist and circulate today, made at the same kiln Sozan had built the year before Eiji took office. This chawan is one of them.

It is a detail that says something particular about Ōmoto itself: a religious movement where the person running the organisation might also, quite literally, be found at the wheel.


What this means for the bowl in your hands

Every time I hold a piece like this, I think about how much of what makes it beautiful was never under anyone's direct control. The potter chose the clay, the glaze, roughly where to place it in the kiln. Everything after that was negotiated between fire, ash and time, inside a kiln that itself only existed because of one man's decision to leave a famous family tradition behind for something quieter.

Pick it up and you feel that decision-making differently. This is not a light bowl. At 437 grams, with a thick, generous rim you can rest your fingers along, it has real presence in the hand, closer to a small stone than to porcelain. That weight is not incidental either. A thicker rim holds more glaze, and more glaze means more room for the fire to do all of this.

That is, I think, the actual difference between something made and something merely produced. A produced object looks the same every time, on purpose. A made one carries the specific, unrepeatable record of the one time it was fired, in the one kiln it happened to be fired in, signed by the one person who happened to be there to sign it.

You are not just holding a bowl. You are holding the only physical proof that this exact conversation between clay, fire, and a rather unusual kiln ever happened.
