A wooden daruma figure from the Shōwa period, lathe-turned and hand-painted, marked 南元だるま (Nanten daruma) on the base with a red maker's seal. Nanten refers to nandina domestica, the heavenly bamboo plant, whose Japanese name carries the homophonic meaning of "turning misfortune" (難転), making it one of the most layered good luck symbols in Japanese domestic life.

Unlike the common papier-mâché daruma, this one is carved from solid wood and shows a warm natural grain through the painted surface. Height 17.5 cm, weight 556 g. Very good vintage condition.
