Tall red raku style tsutsu chawan with white drip glaze, Hioki Nanshū kiln, late Shōwa

€95.00

A tall, straight sided tsutsu shape bowl the colour of terracotta after rain, standing on a small foot as if lifted. Cream marks cross the surface like quick brushstrokes, and on one side a white glaze runs down from the rim and fades halfway. It is as high as it is wide, about 10 cm each way, so it fills both hands the way a winter tea bowl should.

It comes in a box stamped and sealed by the Hioki Nanshū kiln in Kagoshima. The kiln is still active today, on the site of the Daijō-ji, the family temple of the Hioki Shimazu family.

What makes this aka-raku chawan special

The up close look and feel

Turn it slowly and the surface changes: glossy near the rim, drier and matt where the glaze is thin, with pale flecks and a scatter of tiny pinholes (su-ana). The walls are gently uneven, with soft facets where the clay was pressed and shaped.

Charming details

Look inside and the bowl changes character. Part of the wall is glossy red, and along a sharp diagonal edge the surface turns duller and greyer brown, a little less smooth to the touch. At the bottom a small glossy puddle has collected, flecked with blue grey, with a scatter of white specks on the wall above.

→ Tiny pinholes have a name, su-ana, "nest holes". Here is what causes them and why potters never smoothed them away. Read it in my journal.
