Large signed sōsaku kokeshi by Kano Chiyomatsu with painted and pyrography momiji leaf motif, Shōwa period

€385.00

This kokeshi stands taller than almost anything else in the collection: 41 centimetres of smooth, weighted wood, its rounded head resting above a body that tapers in and out again like a figure caught mid movement. Rust red maple leaves drift across the surface in loose, hand painted clusters, their veins burned into the wood before the colour was added. At nearly a kilo in the hand, this is not a piece you display and forget. It asks to be picked up.

This is the work of Kano Chiyomatsu, a sōsaku kokeshi artist from Gunma prefecture whose career spans more than seventy years and includes two occasions, in 1981 and 1982, when his work was presented to the then Crown Prince and Crown Princess Michiko. His pieces have been included in Gunma's own middle school art textbooks and he has been recognised as a Prefectural Traditional Craftsperson. This particular piece carries his signature and seal.

What makes this large kokeshi special

The up close look and feel

The wood has warmed to a deep honey tone with age, its surface smooth from handling. Run a finger over one of the maple leaves and you feel a faint groove, the line where the design was burned into the wood before the subtle minimalistic paint went on. Her head sits heavy and solid in the palm, Her body is from the neck down just one continuous, weighted form.

Charming details

Look closely at the leaves and you notice they are not identical, each one burned and painted freehand, so no two lean quite the same way. The transition from the rounded head into the shoulders is subtle and elegant rather than a single smooth curve, a small structural choice that gives the whole figure more presence than a simple cylinder would.
