Item details

A creative kokeshi by Sekiguchi Sansaku (関口三作, 1925 to 2018), titled Dojo (童女, young girl), Shōwa period, Japan, ca. 1979. The figure stands 21 cm tall in dark lacquered wood, with a carved chrysanthemum kimono, a calm half-hidden face beneath swept dark hair, and a carved obi at the waist. Weight 1176 grams.

Sekiguchi Sansaku was the only kokeshi artist formally recognised by the Japanese government as Master of Creative Kokeshi, with work held in museum collections internationally. The base carries his signature 三作 (Sansaku) alongside a dedication in brushwork recording that this piece was gifted in January 1979 by the employees of the credit department of the Matsumoto branch, most likely a bank. A gift with a specific occasion and named givers is uncommon, and gives this kokeshi a documented social history alongside its artistic one.

Vintage condition, light surface wear consistent with age. Shōwa period, creative kokeshi tradition.
