Sōsaku kokeshi by Yuji Kawase, carved momiji autumn leaves, Shōwa period

€92.50

There is a lot happening on this kokeshi, and none of it by accident. Every leaf covering her body was cut into the wood first, the paint only added after, red, near black, green and yellow layered so vivid it is still bright after all these years. She is small enough to hold in one hand, but she carries the real weight due to her appearance.

Yuji Kawase’s decoration follows the same unconventional order as his shaping: the motif, whether autumn maple leaves, dandelions, camellias or origami cranes, is carved into the wood first, and colour is added afterwards into the carved relief. The result is decoration with real texture rather than a flat painted surface, something you can feel as much as see.

→ What draws you to a kokeshi is rarely the name on the base. Read more about how makers like Sekiguchi carve rather than paint their signature detail in my journal.

What makes this kokeshi special

The up close look and feel

The carved leaf edges stand slightly proud of the surface, giving the painted colour somewhere to sit rather than lying flat against the wood. The cuts beneath the paint catch the light, ridge after ridge where the knife went in before the brush did. The head is smooth and cool by contrast, the closed-eye face left untouched by the carving technique used below. The paint on her hair is precise and you can feel it when you run a finger over her head.

Charming details

Look at the face first: soft, half closed eyes that collectors of Kawase's work return to again and again, the quiet note underneath all that dense autumn colour. Kawase has made the model various times and as it is painted by hand each time, it makes this particular palette of red, near black, green and gold the one that is only ever this piece's own.
