Bizen-yaki guinomi with sangiri firing marks, signed Yamamoto Sōshū, Bishū-gama kiln, late Shōwa to Heisei period

€95.00

Held up to the light, this cup shows the fire's full range in one small object. Deep aubergine and charcoal dominate the body, and across it runs a bold band of red and gold, the mark of ash settling directly against the clay during the long firing. Toward the base, the tone cools into silvery grey. Nothing about this colour was painted on. It is the direct record of where the piece sat inside the kiln.

The rim is uneven in the way a hand-thrown piece always is, tipping just slightly to one side. It is small enough to sit fully inside one closed hand, the kind of size that asks to be picked up rather than looked at from a shelf.

This cup carries the signature of Yamamoto Sōshū, the kiln name under which Bishū-gama in Imbe has worked since 1974. The kiln was founded on the initiative of Living National Treasure Yamamoto Tōshū for his eldest son and daughter-in-law, and it has built its reputation specifically on hidasuki fired this clean and this legible. It comes still complete with its original tomobako and shiori, exactly as it left the kiln.

→ Fourteen days, one fire: what it actually takes to fire a Bizen kiln. A visit to Shibaoka Tōsendō during an active firing, standing at the kiln mouth while the family read the fire by eye and ear alone. Read the full visit in my journal.

What makes this Bizen guinomi special

The up close look and feel

The clay is dry and slightly grainy under the fingers, cool at first and warming quickly in the hand. As with all Bizen-yaki tradition the unglazed stoneware is fired with rice straw to produce these unique hidasuki flame markings. The rim is thin enough to drink from comfortably, the foot compact and stable.

Charming details

The rim is not level: it rises noticeably higher on one side than the other, the kind of irregularity a wheel-thrown cup keeps rather than hides. The red and gold marking does not sit as a straight line but curves diagonally across the front, widest where the ash built up most heavily during the firing.

Hidasuki, goma, sangiri, shiro-Bizen: four names for four completely different things the fire can do to the same clay. This cup carries the combination of sangiri and goma, where ash and reduction work the surface from opposite sides of the same firing. → Here's what each one actually means.
