Hagi-yaki summer chawan with karahai glow, signed by Matsuura Mugen, Shōwa period

€325.00

Held at an angle, this chawan catches the light differently every time. The pale, crackled glaze runs from a soft off-white into a warm, almost blush pink where it thins over the clay, a color Hagi potters call karahai, and it only appears where the firing has gone exactly right. The rim tilts and dips ever so slightly, a wall that never quite settles into a perfect circle, and that small imperfection is what makes it sit so naturally in the hand. It is a bowl built to be picked up, turned, and looked at again.

This bowl carries the tomobako signature of Matsuura Mugen, founder of the Shōunzan-gama kiln in Hagi, built on the very ground where Hagi-yaki itself began centuries ago. Mugen's work grew out of the tradition of Miwa Kyūwa, one of the defining masters of Hagi ware and a holder of Japan's Living National Treasure designation, and that lineage shows in the quiet, unforced warmth of this glaze. Its wide, shallow shape is a natsu-jawan, a summer bowl, made so the tea cools a little faster in the warmer months, which makes this the moment to bring it into use rather than let it wait. A signed, boxed chawan from this kiln is not something that turns up often outside Japan.

What makes this Hagi-yaki chawan special

The up close look and feel

The surface is alive with fine crackle, kan'nyū, running in every direction under the glaze, catching the light in a soft web rather than a shine. Where the glaze pools thin near the rim it turns a warm blush pink, then settles back into a pale, milky white lower down the wall. The clay body underneath has a slight roughness you can feel at the foot, a contrast to the smoothness higher up. At 305 grams and 14 cm wide, it feels substantial and grounded without ever feeling heavy in the hand.

Charming details

Look closely at the rim and you will notice it never quite forms a perfect circle, it leans and dips in the kutsugata, or shoe shaped, style that Hagi potters shape on purpose rather than correct. The wide, low proportions are deliberate too, a natsu-jawan built for summer tea. Turn the bowl over and the foot shows small dark specks in the clay, iron flecks that surfaced during the firing and were left exactly as they came out of the kiln, a small signature of the fire itself rather than the maker's hand.
