Nanbu Tekki cast iron kabuto helmet, phoenix medallion, Shōwa period
This kabuto helmet is very vivid. Deep verdigris iron, vivid orange silk tassels, a brass medallion that catches the light from across the room: this is not a piece that disappears into a shelf.
It is small enough to hold in one hand, and dense enough that you immediately understand it was built to outlast the person who ordered it.
Nanbu Tekki is one of Japan's great ironwork traditions, centered in the Tōhoku region and practiced for over four hundred years. The foundry mark pressed into the base of this kabuto places it squarely within that lineage.
On Tango no Sekku, Japan's Children's Day, families display a kabuto like this in the living room to wish their sons strength and protection.
This one has been doing that for fifty years.

What makes this Nanbu Tekki kabuto helmet special
The up close look and feel
Cast iron has a weight of its own. Pick this up and it settles into your palm with a density that feels ancient. The surface is deep matte blue-green, cool and slightly rough under the finger, with the bronze elements warming against it. The orange silk of the tassels is the only soft thing here, and after fifty years it still holds its color.
Charming details
The phoenix on the central medallion stands for rebirth and the beginning of a new era. Directly below it, a lion figure serves as guardian against misfortune. Both are traditional kabuto motifs, placed with intention. Finding them cast at this scale, with this level of relief detail, is something you only notice when you take the time to look.
