What makes this Takeda Masashi kokeshi special
The up close look and feel
Technique: dark lacquer over turned wood body, with carved relief decoration left in natural wood tone against the lacquered ground.
The lacquer has mellowed over fifty years into something warmer and less uniform than it started. The carved grasses sit just above the surface, their pale wood showing through the dark ground. The relief is shallow enough that you trace it with a fingertip before you fully see it. The head is solid black and smooth, no paint, no variation. It does not rattle. It sits still in the hand.
Charming details
The tomobako carries the calligraphy title 秋草, akikusa, autumn grasses, which names the decorative theme directly. On the back of the piece is a personal inscription from Kitagaki-san, noting it as a souvenir from Zaō. This passed between people before it came here. That inscription is not something you can source from a catalogue.

Excellent vintage condition.
Glaze and paint intact throughout.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth only. Water will cause the lacquer to lift and the wood to swell, so never clean with anything damp.
Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources. In very dry air, older lacquer can crack; a stable room temperature and moderate humidity will keep this piece in its current condition for decades more.
