Small sōsaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai (佐藤翠涯), born 1920 in Yoshioka, Gunma Prefecture, one of the most decorated makers in Japanese creative kokeshi. Suigai trained as a painter under the master Komuro Suiun, from whom he took his art name, before turning to kokeshi in the late 1940s. His work received the Prime Minister's Award in 1966 and was recognized by Crown Prince Akihito in 1970. This small figure has a warm natural wood head with a quiet expression, a deep red body with reserved floral motifs in natural wood, and the original red hanko on the base. Shōwa period, ca. 1970s.
