Creative kokeshi by the Usaburo studio from Kiryu, Gunma, one of the most recognised names in Japanese sōsaku kokeshi. Subtle flower motifs are burned directly into the wood, playing against the contrast between the pale painted face and the warm reddish-brown lacquered body. The form opens at the top, so it functions as a small container as well as a display piece. Signed with the maker's hanko on the side; original studio sticker intact on the base.
