(coming soon) Iwachu cast iron kōro incense burner with sakura lid by Nanbu Tekki Iwate, Shōwa period
I work through my finds in small batches as each piece takes time to research, photograph and write properly. But some items are too good to sit invisible in the backlog, and if you have been looking for a cast iron kōro from one of Japan's defining ironware foundries, I want you to know this one exists.
This kōro was made by Iwachu (岩鋳), Morioka's most recognised ironware foundry and one of the defining names in the Nanbu Tekki tradition. That tradition has its roots in the mid-17th century, when the ruling Nambu clan invited a Kyoto kettle-maker north to produce vessels for the tea ceremony. Iwachu has been part of that lineage since 1902. The lid is cast with a five-petalled flower, and the iron has darkened over the decades into a warm reddish brown that photographs cannot quite capture. The foundry stamp is present.
The full listing, photographs and price will follow. Want to know the moment it goes live? Scroll down.
